He became 128th abbot of Shoukokuji school after a year of a master monk in Shoukokuji. He left there in 1927, began studying drawing under Tomioka Tessai.

The famous letter -Mu- comes from the story ''Gateless Gate'', which is a part of the Rinzai school of Buddhism's most important Kōan writings. The question asked in the story is ''Does a dog have Buddha-nature or not?'' and the answer given is ''Mu (no)''.
