He became a pupil of Katsu Kaishu at his age of 11. He had been in Beijing for 8 years in order to be a disciple of Zhang Yuzhao. After returning home, he had a language school of Chinese, Zenrinshoin. He had an anecdote that he refused the request to be a teacher of the last Emperor of China, Puyi.

The owner of Ukiyoe gallery, Hsgurodou, secceeded in promoting many unknown artists like Miyajima Eishi.
