Goto Zuian was a priest of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, who had served as a president of Rinzaishu University (now Hanazono University), 615th Abbot of Myoshinji temple, and 503rd Abbot of Daitokuji temple.

The phrase, by Chinese Zen Buddhist Yunmen Wenyan (864- 949; J. Unmon Bunen), literally means “Every day is good.” The idea is that “No matter what difficulty you might face, if you live each day to the utmost, you will find each day is a good day.”
